Cultural Resources Planning Workshop

The Hoakalei Cultural Foundation asked Haseko to organize a Cultural Resources Planning Workshop on July 15 to encourage community stakeholders to share their mana‘oabout this area. In addition to an open discussion about the area, the workshop included a site visit to the mauka side of the Kauhale Preserve and drive by the marina.

Workshop participants included representatives from the ‘Ewa-Pu‘uloa Hawaiian Civic Club, Pu‘uloa Outrigger Canoe Club, Halau Hula ‘o Hoakalei, ‘Ewa Neighborhood Board, State Historic Preservation Division, O‘ahu Island Burial Council and Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Archaeologist Tom Dye and Cultural Historian Kepa Maly helped facilitate the workshop and provided an overview of the extensive archaeological work and cultural research that has been done dating back to the more than two decades.

In addition to listening to what participants had to say, Dye and Maly shared the Foundation's vision to begin implementing the preservation plan for Kauhale in the coming months.
