Kauhale Preserve Workshop
Foundation board members participated in an interpretive signage program workshop for the Kauhale Preserve on July 31, 2009. The workshop included an overview of the foundation's vision for Kauhale, and a walking tour of the mauka side of the preserve.
The board was happy to see Office of Hawaiian Affairs Trustees Walter Heen and Oswald Stender in attendance, and thanked the trustees for their support of the foundation's oral history project to preserve the mo‘olelo of President Arline Wainaha Kuuleialoha Brede Eaton.
Other workshop attendees included State Archaeologist Nancy McMahon, Sen. Willie Espero, ‘Ewa-Pu‘uloa Hawaiian Civic Club President Larry Woode and other interested community members.
Archaeologist Tom Dye answered questions about the features at Kauhale, and Cultural Historian Kepā Maly helped put everything into context for the attendees.
The Kauhale Preserve is located on the western end of Haseko's development in ‘Ewa Beach. Haseko sponsored the workshop and encouraged everyone to turn in comments/feedback and cultural information that could possibly be included in the interpretive program. In an effort to include as many members of the community as possible in the process of developing the signage program, a blog has been established so the community can see and comment on what is being submitted. The blog can be found at: www.kauhale.wordpress.com
